1998 CSE-Gauges go out while driving

Dear Esteemed Colleagues,
I have a 1998 CSE Auto that has been exhibiting some weirdness that I'm hoping someone can shed some light on.
While driving today, all but one of the gauges on the dashboard went off, as if the car had been shut off, but the car continued driving relatively normally.
The gauges that stopped working were the Tach, Speedometer, Odometer, Temp, and Fuel. The idiot lights and the Pictogram also didn't work. The trip computer cluster also stopped. The Turbo gauge continued to work normally. The AC fan blew but wasn't cool. The turn signals worked normally.
The weirdness? As I was driving and this was going on, I thought to check and see if my headlights worked. As soon as I turned the headlight switch, all the gauges, the AC and the trip computer came back normally. The trans also seemed to shift when I turned on the headlight switch.
This happened before but never while I was driving. I would turn the key just before starting and the gauges would be off and it wouldn't start. If I waited 30 seconds or so it started.
Can anyone shed some light on what could be happening? I'm afraid if I take it in to a shop and describe these problems, I could be asking for a major diagnostic/repair bill.
Thanks,
Rob
