Early Rear Headrest Removal

I searched an found many messages saying that the rear headrests just come out when you "pull up" but mine don't. I tried it on more than one car, too, but only on 2.0L (i.e. earlier cars).
There are two metal tabs that look like they should be squeezed together... presumably to release the stop which prevents the headrests from pulling out. Nothing that I do to them seems to help.
I looked in the owners manual from a 91, and it shows some plastic handles on the bottom of the headrests.... I don't have any handles like those.
Any thoughts on how to get the rear headrests off?
