Boy, do I hate people who, after a lifetime of Saab ownership, suddenly veer off into Bavarian sleds! Such people should be shamed and banned from Saab sites for eternity!
Unless, of course, you're talking about me. 18 Saabs in our family over the years. 4 9000s myself, a 99, and two 900s. Two years ago I bought a 535i 5 speed, and now I have a 540i 6 speed.
But, like you, I have always got a 9000 on my mind. Can't get them out. Not sure if it helps that my parents each still have a 9000 (a 98 CSE in my mother's case). The full-pressure turbo is still faster than the 535i was, and only the 540 gives similar passing power on the highway, while guzzling heartily.
My girfriend's Pontiac is unsurprisingly a pile of junk, and we're off to look at a 94 CSE turbo this afternoon. They're ungodly cheap, these cars -- $1800 asking for this particular example (well, after all it's white with tan leather -- yech!!). Even at top dollar for 9000s, they're still a lot cheaper than any other car for the equivalent in performance and utility.
Follow Scott's link and check internet listings. I have noticed pricing is creeping up on the dwindling number of good surviving examples. But I would consider anything over $5000 for a good one excessive still.
