I put new bearings in my 88T transmission two years ago and couldn't have done it without the 86-90 factory manual from eeuroparts. It's $23.90 very well spent. I needed to consult it a lot.
On my transmission end float on the input shaft was set by shimming the bearing bracket. You turn the shaft with an electric drill while watching a dial indicator. The right combination of shims gives you 0.05 to 0.10mm float. I understand the newer models use a crushable sleeve.
A worn out bearing, insufficient shims or an overcompressed sleeve would give you radial play. Hopefully new bearings will do the trick and you can use your old gears and pinions.
