Not Sure- Car Died....Now starts...ignition?

Hi all- this one is strange to me. Just drove my 97 9000cse back from NJ to NY today. No problems (no recent problems either). Get home, take the kids to ride their bikes, get in the car and it won't start.
I turn the key and dash lights come on, but when I turn further to start the car, I get one click sound, then the dash lights go out and there's nothing. Turn key off and back on- nothing.
I jump start the car and it runs, but dies within five or ten seconds of removing the cables. I do that a few times with same result.
Finally jump again, keep foot on gas, and drive it about twenty blocks home. A few times the dash lights flicker during drive, but I keep the car from stalling and get home.
I go back to car about two hours later- dash lights come on, then try to start and nothing. I remove battery cables- they are clean- and put them back on.
Car starts fine now and seems OK. Obviously I don't want to drive with the kids until i figure this out.
any Ideas? Any time I have trouble like this I start with a new battery, but my voltage display has read between 10 and 13 volts, so that should be OK, no? THanks much as always, Chris
