Dead temp gauge- 95 CS

I bought the car a few days ago, runs great, but coolant temp gauge dead (making me nervous!). Suddenly today, car was sitting idling, and needle goes to about 8 o'clock. That was an hour ago as I was coming in, so not tried it again. I drove it nearly 400 miles home over the weekend and it was dead... now all of a sudden. Weird.
Question is- sounds like a simple bad connection to me, but did the temp sensor on the head below the t-stat change to more of a plug-in two-prong connector, as opposed to the older style (ala C900s) that were a spade connector? Either that or I have the wrong connector. I think I'll clean it up and see if it keeps working.
