You can get corrosion from dirty or wet battery tops, caused from expansion of electrolyte from overfilled cells or weeping through the battery terminal seals. Acid fumes leaking through the vent caps, or electrolysis due to the mismatch of metal alloys used in the battery posts and terminals can also cause corrosion.
Generally when somebody says a battery needs servicing, its either dead, or in need of additional fluid. On "serviceable" batteries, you can pop the covers off and add distilled water to "recharge" a battery. You cannot service a sealed battery, other than giving it a nice trickle charge to hopefully top it off and keep it good. Places are going more to sealed to keep Johnny Consumer from popping to top off his battery to service it and having the acid dump all over the place. Which is the more dangerous battery? Dunno. One allows excess pressure to vent, but the other vents the pressure, causing explosive gas to vent out. Choose your poison.
I've read that putting a penny near the positive terminal will make the corrosion migrate away from the terminal, and toward the sacrificial penny.
