Tips for Serpentine Belt Tensioner Posted by Porschephile951 [Email] (#2169) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Porschephile951) on Wed, 23 Jan 2008 09:07:16 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I've seen a variety of methods for compressing the belt tensioner (I VASTLY preferred the simpler 2.0L style, but I digress) on the 2.3L. I've always just used the convenience of the reverse-threaded bolt with a bar and socket and the assistance of a partner to pull the belt on, but the idiot (gotta hate 'em) previous owner used the incorrect bolt, so that option was out the window. I tried prybars, a pickle fork, all these things, and then whilst gandering about the tool box I saw a spring compressor.
I didn't have my dslr, so I snapped some crappy pictures with my cell phone:

This seriously took about a minute and gave me tons of slack and all the time I needed to properly fit the belt and check that it was aligned on all the pulleys. I got the compressor cheap at Wal-Mart a few years back. The only thing to note is that the orientation is crucial; you must make sure the legs aren't snagging on stuff not part of the compressible assembly as it's a quick way to bend the hell out of things.
