I'd say that you have a wonderful project car that is worth doing all those jobs on over time. I have a 1998 CSE with 90,000 miles, which is like an Aero. We may be among the last of the 9000 poster DIY's in the distant future.
I had similar clutch hydraulic system problems with my 1993. I replaces the master cylinder, the clutch hydraulic line, and now I'm going to do the slave cylinder and clutch. I'm looking forward to it, because it's my 2nd car and I won't have any pressure. In the future, I'll drive the 1993 and do the clutch on the 1998.
Are you doing the clutch hydraulics yourself?
Check the hydraulic line under the battery real carefully. Mine had a small hole in it that was hard to see.
There are lots of opinions on bleeding systems. I eventually bought a bleeding tool from eeuroparts and carried it in my trunk.
Let us know your final diagnosis and plan of action.
