If you have a turbo then you'll notice a lack of power when you tip into the throttle when in gear. The power will seem less smooth and more, I guess you could say, "explosive," i.e. it lags and then all of a sudden a lot of power becomes available.
I notice vacuum leaks as minor as a minor crack in a small hose; the lack of readily-available power is especially annoying in the city and being a relatively aggressive driver I can't tolerate it.
Even the Jetronic cars with the hotwire MAF system will run alright even with a hose popped off, though the above poster is correct, they are more sensitive. In Trionic cars I notice that the idle has more trouble settling after boost, though if you stay out of the turbo completely the idle won't show any symptoms.
If the leak is real bad in Trionic cars the engine will sit and bounce between 1400 and 1800 RPM, generally speaking. Renewing all your vacuum lines helps so much with gas mileage and performance, and using miniature "zip" ties on all the points where they attatch to the manifold helps alot, particularly if you have a modified car; I did it on my 951 (the engine compartment gets so hot the vac lines will soften and occasionally blow off under long durations of high boost) and it hasn't had a problem. It also alows you to use larger diameter vacuum hose which places less restriction ... I noticed I could tighten up the spring on the aftermarket blow off valve on my modified 9000 when I used thicker, larger-diameter hose, and I'm assuming it's attributable to flow.
The grommet for the PCV system wears out frequently. If you need a quick fix wrap some electrical tape around the plastic fitting to tighten the fit until you can get something to replace it(I found a grommet at the hardware store that would work).
