The three different ways to do it would be: 1) change connecting rod length (shorter rod=lower compressions), 2) change piston design (change where the wrist pin is located or dome/bowl the piston), 3) change the head design for more or less space.
I don't know specifically how Saab does it, but my guess is connecting rod length, since that is the simplest way to retain the most interchangeable parts.
