Three points.
1. Appreciate your responses; now it makes sense and everything ties together (see point #3 below).
2. The Indy directed his mechanic to remove the check valve before consulting me. When I expressed astonishment, he explained about the icing vs. Southern California weather. In fact, he waved his hands towards all the other Saabs in his shop and said "Do you see the check valve in any of these cars? We do NOT need them in Southern California." Sure enough, none of those cars had the check valve, just a straight vacuum hose. So, there is no miscommunication.
By the way, this Indy is very knowledgeable and highly reputable; it goes to show that no one is ever infallible. As we all know, not even the Pope.
3. I went along without thinking the issue through; so the car ran for more than a month without the check valve (until yesterday, I re-intalled it before I posted the question. I was lying in bed last night and somehow this issue popped into my head. Once I started to think about it, it makes less and less sense). Thinking back, that was when the oil leak from the Oil Level sending unit became worse. It all makes sense now.
Once again, much obliged.
I need to re-install the check valve on my son's 89 900 Turbo without delay.
