I did a '95 540 6 speed conversion. Completed last year in May or so. Took me over a year. My saga is chronicled on the bimmer board. I replaced the 144k Nikasil engine with a 66k 93 4.0 V8 from a 740 and also did the 6 speed conversion. Wow! What a car. The 540 6 speed is the fastest car I've ever owned. It is my daily driver now. Except I have been traveling a lot so my son gets to use it more often than I do.

David maintains the 540 won't blow the Aero's doors away but I disagree. Although I have never owned an Aero. I do have three 5 speed 9k turbos at one time. Still have two. The 540 4.0 V8 is in a different league than our four bangers. Naturally with the power you pay a penalty in gas mileage. I get 17 to 20 mpg only. But I am very happy.

Having had both 9k's and the 5 series, when both are well taken care of the bimmer will need less attention. BMW do have many more parts as compared to SAAB's simplicity. The above statements appear to be in conflict. But that's my opinion. SAAB has better body rust protection espacially under body. BMW has a much larger following and market. The parts are a little cheaper.

I just recently found the 7 series are in a similar predicament to the 9k's. No one want them used. Perhaps I should do a 740 6 speed conversion next. If I have time.
