Just to give another point of view....
The automatics are much maligned, unjustly I think. The 4 speed auto in the 9000 is a great transmission. It is much more robust and doesn't decrease MPG like the auto in the 900. I've taken the automatic to over 200K in 2 different 9000's and had no troubles with 3 other 9000's I've owned. The manual transmission is fine also, but unlike the 900, you will have to pull it out to do a clutch or even a slave cylinder.
As for model years, the 95-98 are the best of the breed, very few differences in parts, well sorted out. I wouldn't be afraid of a nice 94. The early cars had there issues, and are or will be 20 years old. I wouldn't go earlier than 88.
The biggest thing is service records and the previous owners. I wouldn't buy one that was driven by a teenager or highly modified for additional horsepower. These cars aren't streetlight racers, and that type of driving will severely limit their life. Something owned by an older driver with full service history is always a safe bet.
If you're looking for reliability, a 95-97 CS is the answer. Low pressure turbo, so less strain on the engine and transmission, a nice ride. The CSE with the high pressure turbo is much faster and probably more options. The HK sterio system on the later CSE's is terrific. The Aero's will probably have been driven a bit harder, but not always. The ride is harsher but the handling is better, so that's a personal taste issue.
Service issues; heater core , Serp belt with idlers and the tensioner shock, DI cassette, rear front suspension bushing.
