I've done 3 9000 WPs on different cars, and yes it will weep for awhile and then start dumping. Its not the rack-and-pinion as much as if it seizes when your on the highway or a long trip, it can lead to bigger things, including warping heads if you drive on it too long, if your driving around town, monitor it and put it on the list of things to do. Look for fellow Saab folks in the area, they maybe able to lend you a garage or space to change it, it is a DIY job if your fairly handy and have basic tools.
>I guess one question about the motor mounts: can anyone tell me how I'll >know if they're going bad. What happens when they're REALLY bad?
The bad thing about motor mounts is that in some places you fail safety inspection ;) The other thing is that it effects shifting for the trans and generally bounces the motor up and down, which isn't good for thelong run.
How can you tell? Look at the upper motor mounts, near the power steering and the firewall, if the rubber is torn, they are bad. For a quick fix, even on a Chicago street is to fill them up with black RTV from any auto store to help dampen the vibration. Its not a long term fix, but it will help. The lower motor mounts, look to see if they are torn or have holes in them. One is below the water pump and the other is back almost under the oil dipstick. For the transmission mount, look at the drivers side, where the trans meets the frame. It also will be torn or ripped.
Recommend that you get one of the Haynes 9000 manuals, its worth just reading thru it. They even rate it 1-5 wrenches, to give you an idea on how complex the job is and most of the 1-2 wrench jobs are doable, the 3+ gets into advanced DIY and up.
Hope this helps,
