Having owned two BMWs, two Porsches, and an Audi, I can say that a Saab would be just as expensive to HAVE maintained. However, if you DIY, the Saab is your best bet. Parts are cheaper than the Germans, and there are many things that can be adjusted/cleaned on the Saab that would be replacement items on the others. Even with by far the most miles, my 9000 Aero has been less troublesome. If you look, you'll notice that most european makes experience fairly steep depreciation as they get older. They have the same issues as Saab, but with Saab being more of a quirky niche product, I think they get it the worst.
Really, anyone who buys an older european car that doesn't DIY is a fool. You're one expensive repair from exceeding the value of your car if you pay someone else to do the work. It just doesn't add up.
