If the head unit won't run the test it sounds to me as if it's faulty, but I hope you get further responses as electronics are not my strong point!
You could try simply unplugging the head unit and re-connecting it a few times, in case the problem is simply poor electrical contact. You can take the head unit out of the dashboard quite easily - if you get a thin but stiff tool (a palette knife perhaps) into the joints either side and pry it foward a little it will then just pull out - but take care not to nuke the finish if you have a walnut dash!
The big 12-pin plug on the back unclips, not difficult. You could spray on some electrical cleaner. Make the connection a few times, it's been there all alone for twelve years and may be feeling unloved.
You can also do some power supply checks on the plug - see the link below. In any case, make a note of http://www.townsendimports.com because it's a very useful source of technical and trouble-shooting documents.
If that doesn't help it might be worth borrowing a head unit from another car of similar vintage: maybe whoever services your car could help with this, just to see what happens. You need the right part number, of course - this is on a label on the unit itself.
If it proves to be faulty, units do sometimes come up on Ebay but there is a company here in the UK that has this sort of thing reconditioned and/or tested on the shelf, Simply Saab in Bristol, last time I asked they were about £60 ($120) which even with shipping is a LOT cheaper than buying a new one!
