Head-on valve seal replacement- looking for gottchas Posted by Kevin M [Email] (#1193) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Kevin M) on Mon, 8 Sep 2008 15:00:41 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Looking for input/advice on a procedure for in-situ valve seal replacement. I have the basic procedure in mind, but looking for any pitfalls. Found a Saab rigid valve spring tool at zdmac.com (search for saab) which looks like it will do the job. 58 bucks, but less expensive than a machine shop + head removal effort.
Procedure Outline:
You will operate on one valve at a time. First on cylinders 1 and 4, then repeat the procedure after placing cyl 2 and 3 at TDC. You want the cylinder at TDC just in case the valve drops away from the head. TDC will allow you to retrieve it!
1. Position cyl-1 at TDC (cyl-4 also)
2. Remove cam shafts
3. Properly store the followers
4. Apply air to the cylinder you are working on. I use an adapter that I made for leak-down tests (parts from a compression tester serve double-duty).
5. Compress the valve spring, remove keepers, extract spring, extract seal.
( I think Tony made a seal removal tool from an old needle-nose pliers)
check out his member-site for tools you can build)
6. Insert a new seal on top of guide and seat it. Looking for suggestions
on seating the new seal.
(Proper sized deep-well socket?)
Looking for input/experience on any one seal manufacturer's quality is better than another. There seems to be several vendors out there to choose from.
Thanks to all,
K
