I have a 1995 Aero that was a Saab company car in 1995. I vaguely recall the Saab brochure mentioned about side door reinforcements in 1995 model year. Again Saab made that a point in the 1996 brochure that 1996 9000 met 1997 US standards or something to that effect.
I don't think Saab made any major changes to the 9000 other than cosmetics after 1995/1996.
If your worry is side impact from a SUV or big truck, then maybe you want to buy something with side airbags. The 850 Volvo would be a good choice but it doesn't have the convenience of a hatchback unless if it's a wagon.
As many have mentioned, the great thing about the 9000 for a college bound is the hatch. If your son doesn't mind driving a wagon, I think a 9-5 wagon would be a good alternative with side airbags and proven safety tests.
