growl at start-up then a loud ticking

I have been trying to deal with a loud growl immediately after my 1996 9000CS starts for several months [it growls for a few seconds after the motor starts]. There is also a fairly loud ticking sound coming from the motor. At first I assumed it was a bad starter, so I replaced the starter, but the noise remained. Changed oil to a heavier grade synthetic (mobil 1 15 W50), no change. Yesterday, I took off the serpentine belt and started the car to see if the tensioner, a pulley, the water pump or the a/c compresser was at fault. The noise remained. [not a total waste of time as I took the opportunity to inject silicone caulking stuff into the various mounts].
What should I try next? I ordered an upper chain guide pad and replacement valve cover gasket last night, and plan on installing them next weekend [need to do this anyway]. Car is a 5 speed with around 145k miles. There are no OBDII codes and check engine light is off.
Thanks.
