The Moog balljoints that I got about three years ago did not have the groove for the circlip, so I obviously didn't use one. Unfortunately, these balljoints only lasted about 2 years/25,000 miles before they croaked (literally) from lack of lubrication - the rubber boot was intact on both sides, but the part was sloppy loose. Eeuro said that their short lifespan was a fluke, that they had not received complaints about them, and since they were more than a year old, no warranty coverage - hmmmmmmmmmmmm......... I was actually more concerned about wasting my time vs. the cost of the part. I replaced them one side at a time and received one Moog and one TRW over a two week period. The new Moog part also didn't have the slot, the TRW part did. We'll see which side lasts longer.
Bottom line: I don't think that the clip is really necessary. In fact, after it rusts up, you may have difficulty getting the old part out.
