Not the EDU - the ignition switch Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Fri, 7 Nov 2008 06:59:35 In Reply to: Strange dash and ignition problem - no power after time, turbosaabtx, Thu, 6 Nov 2008 16:05:57 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The EDU isn't necessary for the engine to run. But the EDU, and the rest of the dash lights, are on the same switched power bus as the fuel injection and ignition. That power bus is controlled by the ignition switch.
If you turn the key to ON and you don't see dash lights, the car won't start. It'll turn over, but with no fuel or spark, no start either.
A typical failure mode of the ignition switch is for the internal contacts to get dirty - carboned up, to be exact. That adds resistance. The more resistance, the less current that passes. And what current does pass, creates heat. As it heats up, the resistance increases. At some point, the contacts won't pass enough current to power things up.
So if it works fine cold, but won't start when warm, and the dash lights don't come on, suspect the ignition switch. I just posted about this below (Starting issue).
