Optical vs. mechanical toe setting Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Fri, 7 Nov 2008 11:21:48 In Reply to: Re: Car drives straight.....but issues!, Saabnutt, Fri, 7 Nov 2008 10:46:43 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
If your wheels are bent, even slightly and within specs, setting the toe by mechanically measuring to the rims (once) is inaccurate. Some of the more advanced optical alignment tools (Hunter for example) have a correction function where they check for bent wheels before setting the toe; the operator rolls the car forward and back slightly before starting, the machine captures this information.
On my SAAB, I set the toe myself - with one adjustment (OK, two sides), there's not much that you can do or mess up. My Audi, with four-wheel independent suspension, needs a more systematic and expensive approach!
