93 cse non turbo. I have been experimenting with different oils for a couple of years now and this is the abbreviated version of what I have found after extensive oil analysis.
For those who don't know, oil analysis consists of sending an oil sample to a lab that analyses the oil primarily for traces of metals from your engine, "wear metals", as well as the viscosity characteristics of the oil. The analysis will tell you if the oil is protecting your engine from wear.
I started using Delo 400, a 15-40W deisel spec oil. It protected very well against wear, with wear metals well below the average for these motors, but the viscosity had consistently degraded one range, from a 40W to a 30W. All very predictable as the B2x4 motors are notorious for shearing oil.
Then I tried Havoline 20-50, which is also a very robust Dino oil spec'd for gasoline motors. I had high numbers of lead and copper, which indicated bearing wear. Again, viscosity was down one grade.
Thinking the oil was too thick, I tried Havoline 10-40W, with even wosre copper and lead wear.
The last oil I tried is Rotella T 5-40W, a synthetic spec'ed for deisel. This oil gave me approximately the same wear metal numbers as the Delo 400 and the viscosity did not degrade, it stayed within the 40W range.
Lessons? Deisel spec oil is good in these motors, synth deisel is even better.
