Have you checked the smell of your plugs after cranking? If you smell lots of fuel not the pump.
I had a pump go bad that sputtered while driving and died. No reprieve. When I pulled the pump, the old one still ran but didn't pump. Usually it seems like the motor dies and you may be able to jar it enough with a rubber hammer or tap on the bottom of the tank with your hand that it may start. That happened on the other 9k. It just wouldn't start again.
If you're handy, there is a fix where you just replace the motor/pump for 25% of the cost of a new assembly. Check past posts, lots of ideas on replacing pump and the hardest part, getting the top of the tank off.
