I've had 4 9Ks and loved every one of them. And I wouldn't argue with those who maintain it's possibly the best Saab ever built--they were wonderful to drive and the build quality was certainly amazing. I spent about $1,800 a year to maintain one I bought with 60K on it, but that was at the dealer. You can certainly keep them going for a lot less if you shop around for parts/service and do some of the work yourself. That said I'm not sure it would be the best car for a college student. They're just plain getting older and I suspect it would suck up a lot of your time and money. A better alternative might be an NG900/9-3. You can get a much newer one for the same money as a decent 9K and they are much more plentiful. The styling may be a bit odd but my '98 (with 148K to date)has flat out been the cheapest, most reliable Saab I've ever owned. I go for months with out even looking under the hood. The automatics are Japanese made and bullet proof and by '97 they had most of the minor issues they had hashed out. And anyone who says they aren't a "real" Saab just plain hasn't driven one. The 9K is a really nice car, and if you can find a nice one for a good price buy it. But they're getting really hard to find and nice low mileage versions aren't cheap. I think you'd be much better off with a NG/9-3 with 100K than you would with a 9K with 180K since they're probably be about the same money.
