I did turn over the engine several times; that's what I meant about it feels like I've been straightening a hem, although this "hem" kept resuming its off-center position. That position is about 1/8" toward the engine side; I don't think it's off that edge now, but it's probably even with it. I simultaneously replaced the longest tensioner assembly bolt--the top one--too, having seen posts that said it had snapped off. The other two screws I removed and re-installed in the course of determining which bolt I actually had; seemingly, they're good too. The tensioner shock does bob a bit, though I did replace it in 2005. I even did the harmonic balancer then, and I remember reading the life span of those is roughly 100K, and I've done nowhere close to that since. Is that life estimate accurate? I suppose anything can go early though too.
Although this pulley and belt replacement was done as timely rather than for cause, I was hoping it would solve a whistling, sometimes low siren-like sound I'd been hearing, but no. I've had the alternator checked out and it is functioning alright; I don't suppose that rules out a failing bearing somewhere, though, does it? I sure hope it's not the turbo going; what's that sound like, too!?!!!
