Thats what a local auto dealer called the program as his neighboring Kia dealer seems to be piling up clunkers for the scrap heap. The low end asian auto makers (not built here) seem to benefit the most from the program. There are not many buyers who just need $4,500 to make the purchase of a new $40,000 sedan.
It bothers me to see them destroy an engine that could be rebuilt and replace another worn out engine somewhere, saving the functional body of a car. I think I read that every new car generates 12 barrels of toxic waste that has to be dealt with, isn't the environment better served by recycling an engine rather than destroying it? They pour sodium silicate into the empty crankcase so the engine seizes. Don't the scrapyards make money on recycling the parts? Engines, doors, glass, interiors? Under this program only tires, radiators and batteries are recycled, the rest is crushed. It seem they take all of the economics out of recycling.
The attached article has some other thoughts on the economics of the program.....
