The board underneath collapsed in several places as I removed it. I think clogged sunroof drains in the past resulted in the board getting wet and disintegrating. I read about someone repairing theirs with fiberglass, so that's what I did.
It was very time-consuming and messy. I first had to remove all the old adhesive, which was very messy even before getting into the fiberglassing. I was sure it was going to look like crap given how uneven the surface wound up being, but after adding the headliner material, it didn't look bad.
The problem was that I wound up having to really stretch the material to get it conform to the curves. The adhesive wasn't strong enough to overcome the elasticity, and the material pulled away from the board. This was fine around the handles above the doors, but at the very back the wind would catch it when driving with windows open and gradually it has come loose quite a bit. I can't bear the idea of doing it again though. It was way too much work.
Important lesson: get help both removing the headliner from the car (especially if it is a CD/CDE) and in attaching the new fabric.
I've been hoping to get rid of this car in the Cash for Clunkers program, but it's run out of money again already. I'm not able to do a last minute deal this weekend.
