1993 9000 Aero, 5-speed
Initial Symptoms:
- TCS light on, in Limp Home Mode
- The car would start hard, then idle low (~400 rpm), warming up the engine had no effect on symptoms.
Initial Troubleshooting:
- Replaced vacuum lines, Cleaned all electrical connections with contact cleaner. No effect.
- Checked resistance on control and safety valves. Control valve was open, replaced with used valve. No effect.
- Swapped safely valve and check valve with known good pieces from properly running car. No effect.
- Removed throttle body, cleaned thoroughly, double checked condition of pins, performed resistance check per instructions at Townsend Imports site. All checks fine, no effect.
- Removed pedal potentiometer, was a bit dirty and corroded. Replaced with used part sourced from Ray. No effect.
- Installed throttle body from known running car, but did not plug in
Stealership Experience:
- Made appoinment with dealer to pull codes, reset, and calibrate "new" pedal pot and TB
- Trailered car to dealer; near end of day service manager calls with update: technician pulled codes P0120 and P0235, then plugged in throttle body. However, he was unable to calibrate because there is "no such procedure for a 1993, procedure only applies to MY 1994 and later"
- After insisting that the system can be calibrated, I offer to bring a copy of the TCS tech manual which describes the procedure. Too late, technician has left for the day
- I meet with the technician the next morning, showing him a copy of the tech manual with highlighted calibration procedure; he agrees to try again
- After a few hours, an update: tech says that he keeps getting DTC code P0122 "TPS Short To Ground" (per work order) and therefore unable to calibrate per instructions
- We discuss potential faults, then decide to try connecting the orginal TB to see if the same fault code is generated. It is, perhaps suggesting that the fault is not in either of the TB's?
After another discussion with tech and service writer, they suggest it's not worth the effort and cost to resolve the problem.
Sooooo, Questions:
- It seems like the TCS codes should have had a different format. Is it possible that they only pulled OBD-type codes and didn't even "dig deep enough" to pull TCS codes?
- There is a local 95 9000CSE Turbo parts car available. Is there any possibility of yanking the Trionic 5.2 and replacing with 5.5 and eliminating TCS at the same time?? The TCS removal procedures I have seen only deal with '92s.
TIA for any thoughts!
