Our independent mechanic wound up speaking with a number of other techs who also worked on Saab 9000s to determine what may have caused the aluminum bracket, which the idler pulley is attached to, to break. He wound up suspecting that possibly the A/C compressor may have been the cause of this problem. He listened with a stethascope to the A/C compressor, and based upon this diagnostic technique, he determined that the compressor was putting an excessive load on the serpentine belt when it was being engaged. This excessive load over a period of time wound up causing the bracket to break (this was the second time in four years, and 15,000 miles, that this bracket has broken on this car). So, he is now in the process of replacing the A/C compressor.
This issue resulted in our mechanic doing quite a bit of research to determine the cause of the problem. Fortunatly he was able to figure out what was the cause. Just shows the value of having a good indy who knows Saabs.
