Exhaust manifold ?bolts? Rant.....long Posted by JEMSaab [Email] (#1053) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JEMSaab) on Sat, 12 Sep 2009 17:05:44 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I was just wondering if anyone has ever had the exhaust manifold studs replaced with bolts? Our '94 9k had the headgasket done last year. I was unable to do the job myself due to many reasons and had a local saab shop do it. In the process some of the studs broke(normal) and they decided to replace every single one with a hex head bolt. I questioned it as I had never heard of or seen such a thing and was told it was "better than the studs" and was ok to do. Maybe it is, I don't know, that's why I'm asking. I'm a little upset b/c this afternoon while investigating an oil leak I noticed one of the bolts had backed itself out. So I tightened it(by hand at first) and thought I'd better check the rest. I found 4 of the 7 loose. Now I don't know if this is the shops fault for using bolts instead of the OEM studs, or if it could have happened regardless of what was used, but finding 4 loose seems like a little much. This shop was in TN where I do not live anymore, however if I did, I would NOT go back to them. They've got excellent customer service and at the time had a very nice place of business. However this is not the first thing I've found as a result of their work. The thermostat bracket bolts were found loose very shortly after the job was done. By loose I mean backed almost completely out and able to tighten both by hand. The alternator bracket was ripped off the head due to one of the bolts missing. The bolt wasn't missing b/c it got lost when the bracket ripped out, it just wasn't there. I know this b/c there were no threads for a bolt to be threaded into the head, somehow they had been completely stripped out. On a good note, the shop was contacted and filled in on the situation and payed for half of the repair. I still wouldn't go back, I can't spend all my time backtracking the work they did to make sure everything was put back correctly. Rant over.
