You don't need to replace the valve cover gasket. I've used the same one for years with out leaks. Just make sure the gasket is not damaged and the mating surface is clean before replacing the cover.
There is another set of marks on the side of the cam gears opposite the cams. Don't recall how they lined up, but the marks position made sense when everthing is lined up.
