Too often we look for a single problem when a combination of little things can add up to a big hit on mpg.
I'm a firm believer in keeping tires pumped up, a clean air filter, no vacuum leaks, no temp reading above 9 o'clock without an investigation, plugs fresh and gapped correctly, and fresh fluids everywhere including synthetic in the engine and transmission and semi-synthetic power steering fluid. My gas is almost always Shell premium, but I happily buy Chevron, Texaco and 76. All of them are top tier.
I get significantly poorer mileage when I play with the loud pedal, and my mpg went down recently before I replaced the DI cassette. I replaced the DI cassette not because of fuel economy but P0340 (random misfire) codes that returned after installing new plugs with the correct gap.
The other major variable is driving style. The best tool for monitoring that is the mpg display that changes constantly. See what it does when you accelerate, go uphill, and stay on the gas instead of coasting to the stop light just ahead. Also if you have an auto transmission, then let up on the gas around 40 mph so it can shift into high gear when you're driving around town.
One more thing, if you have a brake dragging, the car should pull toward the side that has the dragging brake. A hot wheel will pinpoint the problem.
