Car hesitates/cuts on hard accel or hills

Hello, I've been fighting a problem the last few days with my '86 9000 Turbo so figured I'd check in here..
The car seems to hesitate, with popping coming from exhaust either on a hard accel (like to pass) or ANY hill .. Lack of power (which this car generally has plenty of) hills make it hard to even reach 50mph.
I've already tried filling the tank to bypass the fuel pre-pump with no success and have checked for vacuum leaks.
If your just 'putting' around town you can barely notice the problem, it's only at higher RPMS, also the RPM gauge stays consistant when the problem arises.
Something I just found though, and rather odd (IMHO) is that when the problem arises, if I push in the clutch, rev the gas once, and then release the clutch hitting the gas, the problem will VERY momentarily go away and accelerate properly, but within 10 - 20 seconds is back (assuming still under load) I can again do the above and at least get to a normal speed, also with the above trick it will actually have enough to peel the tires in 2nd gear at low speeds (which it should do anyways..)
Any ideas would be VERY appreciated!
