Over the course of the past week I had the occasion to take an extended trip from NJ to Charlotte, NC, then out to Indianapolis, IN, and back to NJ. The total miles traveled were 2,052, and the fuel mileage on the individual legs of the trip were as follows:
NJ to NC, 449 miles, 28 mpg
NC to Tennessee, 478 miles, 31.2 mpg
Tenn to IN, 358 miles, 28.6 mpg
IN to Ohio, 444 miles, 29.2 mpg
Ohio to NJ, 323 miles, 32.3 mpg
The average fuel mileage for the entire trip was 29.7 mpg. I found this mileage to be amazing, particularly given the fact that my speed on the trip generally ranged between 75 mph to 80 mph, with the air conditioning on for about 50% of the time. Details as to the vehicle are as follows:
1994 9000 Aero, with Maptun Stage 3 ECU (dynoed at 280 hp), open air box, JT 3 inch exhaust system, Goodyear DS-D3 tires inflated to 40 psi, 5 speed manual transmission, running premium fuel (various brands).
Overall I felt that this was rather amazing performance for a car with 108,000 miles on it, and as comfortable as the 9000s are.
YMMV, but this is one happy Saab 9000 Aero owner based upon this type of performance.
