as to the alignment, you really don't have to get to the "Golden Links" but you can, all you really need to do is get the alignment marks on the cams, the cam cover, and the one on the back side of the cam chain to line up. I like to use small zip ties thru the cam chain at that point to mark them, easy to remove later too. Just remember it's 16 holes from zip tie to zip tie. If the count doesn't come out something is wrong. Don't forget to remove or back off the chain tensioner before you try to remove the cam chain sprockets. Use a 6 point think 14 MM 1/2 drive breaker bar and have someone else hold the wrench (16,17,18, or 19MM depending upon...) and back it off. Think it's 46 lb/ft off the top of my head. When you go to put it back together, the cam caps will have the alignment notches in them, and the cams will align there too because of spring tension (check this after you have removed the head) and that's all you need to do. Of course you *don't* want to be rotating the crankshaft while the head is off anyway.

Also, rather than a bungee cord, I like to put a long zip tie on the cam chain, cinch it down on the chain and the 12 inches or so that sticks out is the leader to pass thru the head and handle to pull the cam chain up.

I've done over 50 of them by now. If you are new to this having a second person is helpful to seat the head without dropping it, or wrecking your back :).
