Do you know what's actually in your PS system? Thicker fluid will contribute to cold-temp groaning.
GM-spec fluid is so cheap that you can use a turkey baster to remove what is in the reservoir, refill, run for a while, repeat, etc. and get the vast majority of the old stuff out. A lot less messy than running it with various hoses disconnected. Go nuts and even use Valvoline Semisynthetic, about $6/quart. Now if it required Pentosin CHF-11S (spec for VWs and Audis) at $30 - $50 per liter, it might be a different story.
