Power Steering Pump or Rack problem? Posted by Kevin M [Email] (#1193) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Kevin M) on Tue, 22 Dec 2009 16:48:46 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |

On the way up to Illinois for the holiday, I pulled into the BP after 3 hours of travel and when pulling away from the pump, it felt that I had a flat tire. Actually, did a loop and got out to check. The steering felt heavy. Worse to the left than to the right; like there is more assist in one direction than the other. Counter steering is somewhat necessary to straighten out. Told the wife that the pump had "left the building". Pressed on- only 9hrs more to go.
There is no noise from the pump- hoses have the normal weep for this vintage. Going down the road, there is no slop or end play. Turning the wheel lock to lock a couple of times will (kinda, sorta) loosen up the tightness for a minute or two. Still takes quite a bit of effort to turn the wheel.
Now, that I have had a day to think about it and did a little driving around today, I'm not certain that it is the pump!
So, any of you that have had experience in this area, please let me know what you think about the situation and if there is any other test to check out which one is TU.
Tomorrow, I thought about pulling the return line to check if the pump is still pumping. Do they fail without making noise? Silent death?
Happy Holidays to all,
Kevin
