Door panel fabric fail

I replaced the headliner in my '92 9000 a couple of years ago.
Now the foam backing behind the fabric in the driver's door panel has also given up the ghost. My indi told me it was nearly impossible to get the door panels off, and replace the fabric without breaking the attach tabs. He recommended just pulling the fabric off, cleaning the remaining old foam away and then removing the glue from the black plastic under it.
Pulling the fabric loose was easy, using mineral spirits to get the old foam off wasn't too bad, but the spray on glue the factory used is pretty hard to get off. Mineral spirits cuts the glue so poorly it takes massive amounts of rubbing to make any progress. I'm afraid to use something like acetone, because it will probably melt the plastic.
I'm hoping someone here has a method of getting that glue off without damaging the plastic.
After I get the glue off, I plan to just leave the black plastic as is. Doesn't really look that bad.
Thanks,
Ed
