look at your brake fluid reservoir level, it should go down to the operating level as the pump charges up the system. The pump stops when charged. If you step on your brake pedal a few times, that would discharge the pressure and the pump would start until a set pressure is reached.
It's a loud buzzing sound like an electrical motor running. Once the system is charged, it takes a bit of time to discharge so if you turn the key to off and back to ignition, the pump won't re-start unless you discharge the pressure, such as stepping or pumping on the brake pedal.
