Rob, I didn't respond earlier because I couldn't tell from your post whether the starter was or wasn't turning.
If it's not turning, definitely try giving it a few sharp clonks with some long object. Don't wail on it but be firm. This might get it working for awhile.
What happens is that the starter develops flat spots as it ages. If you're unlucky and the starter "lands" on a flat spot after a starting cycle, then the next time you try it, it fails to turn. What you're doing by knocking on the starter is to nudge it past this flat spot so that it can spin once again.
The solution is the replace the starter in these cases; or, keep that metal cowprod in your trunk for as long as you can stand it. It'll probably continue in this fashion for a good while before failing completely.
If the knock DOESN'T get you going, probably still best to replace the starter, but you may also want to check your leads and grounds to rule them out too. Rarely are they the culprit in this scenario.
