I was gonna write this up, but here's the short version.
This is how to do it from the top. Some prefer the bottom, but you have to undo the top bolt anyway, so stay up top.
Disconnect battery.
Have some kind of light to drop behind the engine so you can see better.
You have more room to work if the battery is out of the way, but this depends on your dexterity and thickness of your arms.
Find the starter under the intake manifold and look at it.
There are two bolts, an 18mm one you get at from the driver's side, and a 16mm one you reach from the passenger side. The 16mm is on the outside of the starter toward the firewall, sitting on a little "ear."
Think about your passenger side access. You may want to disconnect a couple of vacuum hoses, maybe the MAP sensor, just so you can get in there more easily and not damage anything. Your call.
Before you undo the bolts, remove two wires on the back of the starter that are held in by smaller nuts--don't recall, but maybe a 12mm and an 8mm. (Could be a couple mm either way on each one.) The larger of the two can be tight, so undo these first as there isn't any slack in the wire to let you mess with it after the starter bolts are undone. Tuck the wires out of the way.
Undo the 18mm bolt from the driver's side first, then the 16mm one from the passenger side. You'll need an extension on a ratchet to do the 16mm. Just a bit awkward to get at.
With the bolts off, the starter is free, but may not fall out of the way. I had to tap mine with a wrench or soft hammer to knock it loose. Just pull it out of the way and up from the passenger side.
Put the new one down behind the engine. I put the electrical connections on now and snug them down.
The starter will only go in one way... it should be obvious. Tighten both the 18mm and 16mm bolts, then tighten the the electrical connectors.
Reconnect the battery and anything else you undid/disconnected and fire it up.
You should be good to go.
If I've left anything out, someone here will likely point it out.
