Battery shorting due to heat?

Hello to all!
My 95 Aero has been experiencing some electrical problems lately. Last weekend (hot with high 90's in PA) all lights went off when I tried to start it. It felt like ground was disconnected. Car’s clock got reset as well. Everything came back to normal on the second try. So I went to AutoZone to check the battery (it's pretty aged)- checked out OK.
Today is very hot and humid and when I tried to start it at noon- all dash lights were very dim, I could hear relay clicking, but starter wouldn’t turn over. I tried, and waited, tried and waited and it finally started with ECU showing 8V after start up. Is this a sign that battery is going bad or gets shorted under the load?
It was pointed out to me that it also can be a starter’s solenoid shorting. What else can it be?
Thank you for your input.
Vic
