I've done this on quite a few cars (oddly enough, also on a 84 Jetta & 16V Scirocco) including my 9000 Aero.
The tricky part is getting moving in 1st gear which TODDMO outlined. I also find that getting into 5th isn't as clean as getting through the other gears. When shifting from 2-3 and 3-4 it's as simple as sliding out of the higher gear and holding gentle pressure on the gate to the lower gear; it usually slips in. Don't force it or slam it.
Going down from 5th isn't tough if you can double clutch and rev match.
But again, if you're only 350 miles from home and it's an interstate highway, just fill the tank and roll home in 5th gear. You'll be fine.
