Fuel tank strap.

I breathed life back into my '96 Citrin Beige CS and was all set to drive it to the Clerk's Office to title and register it when I heard a scraping noise. DAMN! the front half of passenger side fuel tank strap was lying on the pavement. I got back in, reversed the car back down my driveway, and did a tank strap search of this site. I put jackstands under the rear trailing arms and went about detaching the strap. Fortunately there was less than two gallons of fuel in the tank. The front hanger was simple to lift off but the rear was slightly more challenging. But the rear nut succumbed to the persuasion of a 1/2 a can of penetrating oil, a 13mm deep socket, two extensions, a ratchet, and whole lot of elbow grease. Once removed, I could see the 1-1/2" steel strap was rusted through in several places. I estimated the strap length with a length of stiff wire. Turned out to be 36 inches long. I purchased a piece of aluminum measuring 1/8" thick, by 1-1/2" wide, by 8 feet long for $20 from Lowes. I removed all remnants of the old strap from each end and used two 14mm bolts and nuts to attach them. I bent the strap to match the front contour of the tank then forced the rear hanger onto its mounting bolt. WHEE!! Before tightening it, I reinserted the black plastic between the tank and the strap. A perfect fit and it looks gorgeous!!!!
Happy Trails!
