Decided to try a patch kit first. I have my doubts about whether it will work because of the location of the crack (weight of fuel will tend to split it more) and the warning in the kit that it doesn't work as well with polyethelene. But I used the "fuel styptic" to stop the minute amount of gas that wanted to bleed out the very edges even after I drained the tank and tilted the car and let it sit for most of a week while it rained day after day. Then I sanded and cleaned the area per the instruction and made the putty included in the kit, which looks like JB Weld except white. I heated the area, which was recommended by the instructions, using an incandescent light bulb right next to it before and after applying the putty.
I have to say it looks pretty good and feels pretty solid, but of course I'll be looking under my car on a regular basis for quite a while.
Pulling the tank looks like a pretty ugly job for a car that otherwise has so little value - no one is likely to buy a '93 CDE with 177k miles in San Diego at any price. And that crack is not its only issue. So if the patch doesn't hold, scrapping the car is a distinct possibility.
