Thanks to all for your generous advice and helpful stories of similar experience especially RandyNJ. You helped me realize the problem is a leaky HG.

This is my only car and it's in nice shape otherwise, but I don't want to spend a lot or take it out of commission for more than 2 days.

Later this week, I am planning to try a can of HG repair stuff, sodium silicates, and see if that does the job. It should seal the heater core leak too. Instructions say to flush, add the stuff, run engine 20 to 30 minutes, flush, refill with coolant.

Some say the HG repair gunk can clog the radiator or cause other problems. To keep the stuff out of the radiator for the 20 to 30 minutes that I circulate the sealer, I am thinking of bypassing the radiator by inserting a pipe between the top radiator hose and the short hose going into the water pump. Does anyone have thoughts, advice or caution if try that?
