Thanks for the replies !
OK - here's the scoop, person by person:
Skibumm100, I'd be very happy to have several 9000s !!!
As for the flex pipe, have you looked into the aftermarket/generic replacements ? $30 at most shops; you just slice out the bad 'un and clamp in the new one - very easy, and WAY sturdier than OEM ever was.
Marvin - you summed it up brilliantly !!!:
"My '94 9000 had ACC and it stunk, stunk, stunk, stunk!"
Senor Don:
My ACC is in 'econ' 90% of the time, actually programmed to start that way - I only use it in full auto for a/c season and right now my leaky a/c is unlikely to do much even if it came on.
When I said this: "with it right around 32F here I had some comfortable heat - followed immediately thereafter by it going directly to the 'arctic blast mode' with zero driver intervention."
It meant that with it in econ mode-> it went STRAIGHT from pushing heat to blasting full COLD outside air instead-> NO middle ground AT ALL !!!
I think you misunderstood the nature of my query because of the below:
"The problem you report suggests an ACC wiring or control head open circuit. Clean the ACC grounds, check the connector terminals, then substitute a known good ACC unit. Fleabay usually has several available at reasonable prices. "
I reply thusly-> I dunno, NO, NO, and NO !!! Already did the last and I ain't doing it again either !!!
The calibration, or 'self-test' as you called it - produces no error code and no change at all...boohoo. Dunno how many times I've done THAT trick by now...
Keith - paying the dealer for anything is simply NOT in the budget for me, BUT: If my mechanic has one he's ready to junk with manual controls in the spring, I will merrily scrape out those controls and rip that NASTY ACC right out altogether !!!!!!
Marvin described it best: "It had a knob for hot and cold, air flow direction, and fan speed. It was great!"
Now back to my original query - which has not been answered at all here in the replies:
Has anyone here had any experience/luck/fortune changing or adding to the electronics of this system - say with an outside thermistor or even a potentiometer ?
There's GOT to be a better way ???!
(NOT including spending piles of $$$ either, thanks.)
The way I see it the stooopid little sensor 'feels' the heat arriving and in response the (stooopider still...) ACC 'decides' to cool the place off for me when it is around 32F or lower outside.
I am mostly OK with being cool, but it has safety implications when the windows need to get and stay clear and it is VERY wet here almost all the time.
Lastly:
Has absolutely everyone here ONLY ever taken the OEM path with this and NOBODY has ever changed it to make it better somehow ?
Best Wishes.
