I use some anti-seize or high temp grease like brake caliper lube. A skim is all you need. And about once a year or so I clean up the lug bolt using a wire wheel on my bench grinder. Then reinstall with a skim of the lube du jour.
This has worked great for the past 10 years, but for the previous 30 I just put a few drops of motor oil --right off the dipstick-- onto the threads and that worked, too. I've never had a problem removing a lug bolt that I've tightened. But when some goon at a repair shop has had his mitts on it, they are usually too tight.
What you use matters less than using something that will prevent corrosion, at least in locales things tend to rust easily. Then assuming you're torquing them correctly, there should be no issues.
